An enthusiastic group of parents concerned with Cerebral Palsy, organized and founded the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of Toronto in 1947. This organization eventually proved to be highly respected and effective in awakening public interest and understanding of Cerebral Palsy.
Participation House, Markham opened in 1972 and is the registered business name of the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of Toronto. Participation House, Markham is designed to provide adults with disabilities, the opportunity to live their life with dignity, a sense of independence, and a place to call home. We've grown to accomodate 100 individuals, including six community settings. These settings give even more independence to our people, while providing the security and supports needed to meet their needs. Click the Our Facilities link to learn more about these residences. Our Mission Statement is to enhance the quality of life of individuals with disabilities through continuum of services designed to reflect individualized approaches, community involvement and a respect for human dignity. Guiding Principles The fundamental values that guide the direction of Participation House Markham are reflected in the following guiding principles: We value and respect the uniqueness, choices and diversity of individuals and families. We believe that people have the right to make self determined and informed choices. We believe that quality of life is determined by the individual, their family, and/or support network. We believe that people have a right to live and participate in the life of the community. We believe people need to be safe both within and outside the service delivery system. We recognize that the growth and development of individuals is a dynamic process and that our services must reflect this reality. We believe that our organization must be flexible, accountable, innovative and compassionate in responding to the needs of the individuals supported by our organization and their families. We value collaboration with service providers and community organizations in our endeavours to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities. |
